Police have warned members of the public against criminal elements in the transport sector who are using fake number plates, which are fixed on empty plates, to enable them carry out robberies and go undetected.
According to Police Spokesperson, CP Fred Enanga, after they have committed crime or robbery, they remove the fake number plates and dispose them.
He said this becomes difficult to trace for the wanted car with fake number plates under the Automated Number Plate Recognition System.
“Our task teams and traffic officers are now required to routinely check registration plates to confirm if they are genuine. Cloned plates are used by criminal to disguise its identity, hide the fact that it is stolen or avoid paying fines generated by camera systems,” the police mouth piece stated.
He added that the cloning and defacing of genuine number plates affects road safety and provides cover for criminal.
“If culprits are caught, they will face severe consequences.”
