CPA Mary Theresa Kiggundu has become the first female accountant to be awarded the newly introduced Woman Accountant of the Year award by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU).

This was during the 2024 Accountancy Service Awards (ASA) dinner held at Imperial Resort Beach Hotel in Entebbe town.

The Accountancy Service Awards are premium annual awards of excellence aimed at recognising individuals or entities that have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the accountancy profession in Uganda and beyond.

The Woman Accountant of the Year 2024 award was presented to CPA Mary Theresa Kiggundu for her outstanding contribution to the accountancy profession in Uganda.

The aim is to recognise the phenomenal contributions of female accountants in their organisations and communities.

According to CPA Derick Nkajja the Secretary/CEO of ICPAU, traditionally, accountancy has been a male-dominated profession, but this state of affairs has changed.

“Increasingly, women are taking up leadership positions and contributing tremendously to the Accounting profession, hence the need to recognise them,” he added.

CPA Kiggundu, the first recipient of this award, served as the Director of Finance and Accounts at the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO).

At least more seven accountants were awarded at an event officiated by Mercy Kainobwisho, the Registrar General and Executive Director of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB).

The Regional Members Network of the Year 2024 award was presented to CPA Uganda-Ankole Region in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the Accountancy Profession in Uganda.

The Institutional Partner of the Year 2024 award was presented to Uganda National Oil Company.

The Unique Humanitarian Award for the Year 2024 was presented to Pastor Gary Skinner in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Humanity in Uganda.

The ICPAU Honorary Membership was awarded to John Bosco Ntangaare in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Accountancy Profession in Uganda.

The Young Accountant of the Year 2024 award was presented to CPA Joseph Osako while the CPA of the Year 2024 was presented to CPA Ruth Doreen Mutebe Nseko.

The ICPAU Gold Service Award was presented to CPA Keto Kayemba.

“I’m here today because my fellow accountants supported me along the way,” said CPA Keto Kayemba, the recipient of the prestigious Gold Service Award.

Speaking at the 2024 Accountancy Service Awards, CPA Ronald Mutumba highlighted the background of the event, noting that the awards began in 2015 and aim to recognize outstanding contributions to the accountancy profession in Uganda and beyond.
