Cherop Double: Charity Wins Gold, Risper Takes Silver at CAA Africa Championships

Abeokuta, Nigeria | Uganda’s young athletes continued to stamp their authority on the continental athletics stage with a stunning gold and silver finish in the U20 Women’s 5000m at the CAA African U18 & U20 Championships, which concluded on Sunday evening.

Charity Cherop delivered a dominant performance to claim gold in a time of 15:10.88, while compatriot Risper Cherop followed closely to secure silver, completing a remarkable 1-2 finish for Uganda. Kenya’s Sharon Chepkemoi took bronze, rounding off the podium.

The victory caps a strong campaign for Uganda’s juniors at the championships, with Team Uganda walking away with a total of 9 medals: 4 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze.

The strong showing from Uganda’s juniors highlights the country’s growing dominance in middle and long-distance running on the African continent, as the nation celebrates #UgAthleticsAt100.

The performance has been widely celebrated at home, with Uganda Athletics Federation hailing these young stars as “the future champions of Uganda.”
