Lady Doves FC, the women football club representing Uganda in the CAF Women Champions League CECAFA Qualifiers, has started with a win over Djibouti’s FAD FC in a thrilling match played at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya.
The game ended 5-0 in favour of the Ugandan side.
The goals came from Leticia Nabbosa in the 16th minute of the first stanza before Fazila Ikwaput doubled their lead 14 minutes later.
Norah Alupo scored the third in the 53rd minute. The Horn of Africa side would in the 60th minute concede the fourth when Nasteho Roble Djama tapped in their own net. As if that was not enough, Fazila Ikwaput sealed the scoring with another spectacular goal five minutes to the end of the game.
Lady Doves Coach, Fred Musiime attributed the win to God and players’ positive attitude and desire to shine.
“It has been a pleasure, I thank God for this win, it has been mauvelous and a blessing from God. It was not our own making but through God, we have got victory today. It was also the struggle of players working together as a team to fight for today’s win,” says Tusiime.
The Coach heaped praise on his players whom he said followed his instructions before encouraging them to keep working hard if they are to win more games.
On her part, Fazila Ikwaput who netted a brace said today’s game was good despite being able to give her best because she was recovering from an injury.
“I didn’t give my best because I am just recovering but I know in the second and coming matches, I will do more than what I have done today,” she noted.
“I feel so good giving a brace because that is what is what is expected of me,” Ikwaput said.
He said that just like in Uganda where she emerged the top scorer in the league, she wants to score the highest number of goals in the tourney in Nairobi.
The tournament which kicked-off today with the Lady Doves game will run up to September 9, 2021.
Eight clubs are participating and pit in two groups A and B. Coach Fred Musiime’s women are in Group A alongside PVP (Burundi), FAD (Djibouti) and Simba Queens (Tanzania). The other group game between Simba Queens and PVP is still goalless.
Group B comprises New Generation (Zanzibar), Yei Joint Stars (South Sudan), CBE (Ethiopia), and Vihiga Queens (Kenya).
The tournament which is running on a group and knockout format, will see the winner gain one automatic qualification slot to the CAF Women Champions League, to be played in Egypt later this year.
