Baryomunsi said the decision to extend the terms of office for Local Councils One and Two was taken by yesterday’s Cabinet meeting chaired by President Museveni.

He said cabinet invoked a clause in the Local Government Act that empowers the Minister to extend the terms for a period not exceeding 180 days.

The extension takes effect from 10th July, 2023 when the previous term expired.

Following the Cabinet decision, the Minister of Local Government is expected to present to Parliament a submission requesting for Parliamentary approval before issuing a notice to the public confirming the extension.

The Minister says within the 180 days, “government will be looking for funds to carry out elections of the two categories.”
