Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — Uganda has cemented its position as a world-class adventure tourism hub after the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was ranked the third-best adventure Destination globally at the prestigious TOURISE Global Tourism Awards ceremony held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on November 12.

The accolade, celebrated by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), places the UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside renowned international adventure icons. Bwindi’s recognition follows the Ancash region in Peru (first place) and the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador (second place).

Conservation-Led Tourism

The park, famed as the sanctuary for nearly half of the world’s remaining endangered mountain gorillas, was lauded for its unique, immersive trekking experiences and its strong commitment to sustainable, conservation-led tourism.

Professor James Kalema, Chairman of the UWA Board of Trustees, emphasised the significance of the award. “This accolade is a powerful endorsement of Uganda’s commitment to conservation-led tourism,” he stated. “Bwindi demonstrates how protecting nature can create meaningful adventure experiences while empowering communities and sustaining national development.”

Dr James Musinguzi, UWA Executive Director, added that the global ranking is an inspiration to all stakeholders. “It proves that our model of conservation-based tourism is delivering results — conserving biodiversity, uplifting communities, and strengthening Uganda’s global image as the Pearl of Africa.”

Why Bwindi Stood Out

The TOURISE Awards, which honour destinations that exemplify innovation, sustainability, and exceptional visitor experiences, recognised Bwindi for several key features.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking: The primary adventure draw, offering visitors an unparalleled opportunity to encounter the gentle giants in their ancient, dense rainforest habitat.

Rich Biodiversity: The park is home to a staggering array of flora and fauna, including 120 mammal species, over 350 bird species, and ancient trees dating back over 25,000 years.

Unique Ecosystem: The rugged terrain of steep hills and valleys provides a challenging yet rewarding hiking experience, catering to seasoned adventurers.

The international visibility gained from this award is expected to significantly boost inbound tourism, reinforcing Uganda’s reputation as a leading destination for authentic and responsible adventure travel.
