Opposition figure, Dr Kizza Besigye, and Hajj Obeid Lutale have been charged with unlawful possession of two pistols and ammunition and remanded to prison until December 2, 2024.
The veteran politician was arrested in the Kenyan capital Nairobi where he had traveled for a book launch by former Kenyan Justice Minister Martha Karua.
Besigye and Lutale were on Wednesday morning arraigned in the General Court Martial in Makindye, Kampala on charges of offenses relating to security, illegal possession of two pistols, and illegal possession of eight rounds of ammunition.
The prosecution claims that the two committed the offenses in Nairobi (Kenya), Athens (Greece), and Geneva (Switzerland).
They are further accused of convening meetings abroad to solicit funds purportedly intended to disrupt national security.
Court Martial Chairman, Brig Gen Freeman Mugabe, remanded Besigye and Lutale to Luzira prison.
The two will reappear for mention and ruling in their case.
Besigye’s lawyer and city Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, argued that the charges on his client lack jurisdictional merit, asserting that the UPDF Act cannot extend its reach to other jurisdictions.
