KAMPALA — Former Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament Anita Among is expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court this afternoon, marking a significant development in a high-profile corruption investigation that has engulfed Parliament’s former leadership.

Sources familiar with the investigation say prosecutors have completed preparations for the case and finalised the prosecution file, paving the way for formal charges to be preferred against Among. The anticipated court appearance comes after weeks of investigations involving the former Speaker and several senior parliamentary officials.

The case stems from investigations into the alleged mismanagement of parliamentary resources, corruption and wealth declaration. Over the past several weeks, investigators from the Inspectorate of Government and the Criminal Investigations Directorate searched properties linked to Among in Nakasero, Kigo and Bukedea, seized documents and electronic devices, and impounded several luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover, as part of the probe.

The investigation has also widened to include Parliament’s bureaucracy. Last week, seven senior Parliament officials were arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court on charges including embezzlement, causing financial loss and money laundering involving approximately Shs31.9 billion allegedly diverted from Parliament between 2023 and 2026.

Those charged include Chris Ariko Obore, Director of Communications and Public Affairs; Daniel Adilo, Director of Human Resource; Leonard Okema, former Executive Secretary in the Office of the Speaker; Rajab Kaaya Ssemalulu, Principal Research Officer; Emmanuel Emuron Okwi; Vincent Otebata; and Methods Murebe. Prosecutors allege the officials abused their respective offices to divert public funds, allegations they are expected to contest during trial.

Among has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Speaking recently to a delegation of Teso elders at her residence in Nakasero, she maintained that investigations had not substantiated the allegations levelled against her.

“I was accused of many things, including having sacks of money, which was not true at all. All the things I was accused of were not found during the investigations,” Among said.

She has also said that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni treated her fairly during the investigative process and reiterated her loyalty to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

The corruption investigation has already had major political consequences. Among withdrew from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament amid the ongoing probe and was succeeded by Jacob Oboth-Oboth.

By press time, the specific charges expected to be read against Among had not yet been publicly disclosed. Her appearance before the Anti-Corruption Court is expected to provide further clarity on the scope of the prosecution and her alleged role in the broader Parliament corruption scandal.
