President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed the Minister of Foreign Affairrs and the Attorney General to write to authorities in the United Kingdom (UK), demanding for the source of their information that Speaker Anita Among owns assets in the country.
In a letter dated May 02, 2024, to Gen Jeje Odongo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Museveni revealed that he had held a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E Kate Airey, at State House Nakasero, where she informed him that Anita Among owned Houses and bank accounts in the UK.
“…She said that Anita Among has got a house or houses in the UK and has got bank accounts from which she pays school fees for her children who are studying there,” wrote the President.
The President directed the Inspector General of Government (IGG) and the Minister of Integrity to investigate whether Speaker Among had declared her alleged UK properties as required by law under the Leadership Code Act.
“I have instructed the Inspector General of Government and the Minister of Integrity to investigate this matter thoroughly and report back to me,” President Museveni said.
The President’s directive are in the backdrop of UK government sanctions against Anita Among.
The UK government cited corruption and illicit wealth on the part of Anita Among saying the sanctions were aimed at combating corruption globally.
Now, in a May 11, 2024 letter to the Foreign Affairs Minister, the President revealed that the Deputy IGG, Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria, informed him that Anita Among never declared that she had a house or houses in the United Kingdom.
“I have received a letter from Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria, Deputy Inspector General of Government, of the 9th of May, 2024, informing me that the Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among never revealed that she had a house in United Kingdom,” Museveni said, adding that Among had told him that she does not own a house or houses in UK.
“Therefore, working with the Attorney-General, write an appropriate letter to the relevant authorities in UK to demand the source of their information. They cannot falsely accuse any of our people and we just let it pass,” stressed Museveni.
