Vice President Jessica Alupo has installed Rt. Hon. Professor Edward Rugumayo as the first Chancellor of the Mountains of the Moon University.
The ceremony took place at the MMU Lake Saaka Campus, Fort Portal City on Friday, February 23, 2024.
The event was held alongside the celebration of the 15th Graduation, where 642 students were awarded diplomas and degrees. They included 305 females and 337 males.
Alupo was photographed helping Prof Rugumayo to wear a mortarboard during his installation as the first chancellor of Mountain of Moon University.
“I was representing H.E. YK Museveni. I congratulate Prof Rugumayo and wish the Mountains of the Moon University the best,” said Alupo in a short message on X.
In his maiden speech, Prof. Rugumayo committed to fostering a culture of academic excellence, learning and service to society.
“In so doing, I implore the stakeholders of Mountains of the Moon University to support me in carrying out this task. It is important to note that the responsibility we have is to develop and shape the minds of our young generation, we should therefore aim at working professionally, and ethically to transform the minds of our university.”
He said teaching should encompass strategies and practices that promote economic growth, social equity, and environmental stewardship while ensuring the well-being of current and future generations.
“It is my hope and dream as a founding member chancellor of MMU to witness the university extend services to the whole region.”
In her speech, Vice President Alupo assured the management that the report they gave would be relayed directly to His Excellency, the President for solutions to be prescribed and disseminate the outcome of those recommendations afterwards.
“To the graduands, today is a day of celebration, reflection, and anticipation as you are facing a new chapter. The encouraging part of facing the new chapter is that you are leaving the university space already equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experiences gained during your studies,” she noted.
