Operation Shujaa forces launched strikes against Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in Eastern DRC and rescued a doctor who was taken hostage.

Defence Spokesperson, Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye, said the joint operations by Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) were conducted last week.

“Our Doctor brother who was taken hostage by the ADF in Kabasha in the month of October 22, has just come out of the hands of the ADF this Friday, December 2, 2022, after strikes carried out by the FARDC-UPDF in the graben last Sunday,” said Kulayigye on Friday, December 2, 2022.

Last month, ADF rebels made a new incursion on the Butembo-Beni axis targeting Kabasha, a large village located 30 km north of Butembo, on the Butembo-Beni axis (North Kivu).

In October, they attacked the village of Maboya, only 10 km south of Kabasha, and killed seven people including a Catholic nun from the diocese of Butembo.

According to Kulayigye, the latest military strikes against the rebels were hailed by civil society.

“This is towards Semuliki River near Muleke/Mwalika, here we are in Buliki Groupement in Ruwenzori sector. The new Congolese civil society of the Ruwenzori sector says thank you again to the FARDC-UPDF for this great work,” he tweeted.

He added: “The UPDF is indeed humbled by the support of the Civil Society Organizations and the people in general of this region. Bravo operation SHUJA.”

President Museveni recently appointed Maj. Gen. Dick Olum the new commander of Operation Shujaa as the troops continue their hunt for ADF.
