Makerere University has announced dates for its 88th Guild Presidential Elections.

The university said the scheduled elections will take place on Wednesday, November 30, 2022.

According to a communication from the Dean of Students, all students are encouraged to participate in the electoral process.

The university said sensitization on Electronic Voting by the Student Guild Constitution Review Commission is also ongoing.

“The office of the Dean of Students hereby calls for nominations of candidates for the Guild Electoral Commission. Nominations are hereby opened with effect from Thursday, 10th November 2022 and shall close on Saturday, 12th November, 2022 at 11:59pm East African Time,” the university said in a statement.

Nomination Forms and guidelines for submitting the duly filled and signed nomination form, shall be accessed on https://www.mak.ac.ug/guildelections2022.

Guidelines

Candidates with disabilities shall use the same link to be nominated.

There shall be no payment of any electoral related fees at any level to any person or any other authority by aspiring candidates in this process.

Only candidates whose applications are received by the said deadline will be considered.

Candidates who satisfy the nomination requirements shall be issued with a Certificate of Eligibility to contest by the Dean of Students and declared as duly nominated for the respective positions.

All Candidates must acquaint themselves with the provisions of the Makerere University Guidelines for Conducting Elections of the 88th Guild (November 2022 – February 2023).

Makerere University Council in July this year banned physical guild elections at the institution following the death of a student in a scuffle during campaigns for guild elections.

Betungura Bewatte, a second-year law student at Uganda Christian University (UCU) Kampala Campus, was stubbed to death in a clash during last-minute campaigns.

This resulted in the suspension of guild elections as well.
