National delegates of the strongest opposition party Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) convened at Mandela National stadium, Namboole to cast votes in a decisive election on who their next Party President will be.

However, a heavy downpour that began Friday morning in most parts of Kampala and its neighborhood delayed the exercise prompting the extension of its start to later hours.

According to earlier arrangements, candidates and delegates were to arrive before 8:00am, followed by delivery of their last speeches to the delegates at 8:30am and then voting.

By 10:00am, some of the candidates and a big number of delegates had not arrived majorly due to the inconvenience by the rain.

Voting started at 2:20pm with many observers skeptical about what time the exercise is likely to end.

The election will see the party’s incumbent President Gen Mugisha Muntu either retaining the seat he has occupied for the last five years, or defeated by any of the other three candidates in the race.

As of now, the voting exercise is ongoing with tight race being between former Kumi district legislator Patrick Oboi Amuriat and Mugisha Muntu who previously was army commander of the UPDF.

The other candidates are Moses Byamugisha and Malcolm Matsiko.
