In a First, Two Independent MPs Win Elusive EALA Seats

Two independents and one opposition lawmaker were among the nine winners

For the first time, two independents and one opposition lawmaker have sailed through to grasp the elusive East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP seats.

Independent candidates Veronica Kadogo (383 votes), Amongin Jacqueline (338 votes), and Democratic Party’s Gerald Siranda (233 votes) secured EALA seats during a Thursday election held at Parliament.

They were among the nine candidates with the highest number of votes who become Uganda’s representatives to the regional parliament.

The other six winners belong to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

They are; Rose Akol (422 votes), Namara Dennis (415 votes), Kakooza James (405 votes), George Odongo (403 votes), Musamali Paul (401 votes) and Mugenyi Mary (367 votes).

Losers

A total of 28 legislators had lined up for the nine coveted seats.

The other candidates who did not make it to the East African Parliament include Kaija Harold Scandrone (FDC, 99 votes); Ebil Fred (UPC, 139 votes); Kateregga Mohamed (Jeema, 36 votes).

The independents were: Agaba Gilbert (210); Ategeka Moses (4); Bukyana Julius (8); Bwengye Lauben Muhangi (5) Kapyata Dennis (9); Kiryowa Stella (27); Lolem Josephine (11); Kisembo Ronex Tendo (6); Luyinda Fred (5); Murangira Ambrose (181); Muwonge Mugwanya Daniel.

Other independent candidates were: Muyinda Allan Stanely (4); Naamara Patience Tumwesigye (35); Nakitende Salaama Adelaide (6); Rwandarugali Phiona (23) and Tindyebwa Joseph (22).

At the closure of the session, the Speaker of Parliament Anitah Among sent the members on a one-month recess and asked them to use the last two weeks for oversight of the Parish Development Model.

She then adjourned Parliament sine die.
