The Court of Appeal has dismissed an election appeal filed by Lydia Wanyoto seeking to nullify the election of Connie Nakayenze Galiwango as the validly elected Woman MP for Mbale City.
The three Justices of the Court of Appeal; Elizabeth Musoke, Eva Luswata and Christopher Madrama dismissed Wanyoto’s appeal on grounds that it was filed out of time.
Shortly after the 2021 general elections, Lydia Wanyoto ran to the Mbale High Court challenging Galiwango’s election as Mbale City Woman Member of Parliament.
She claimed that the electoral process was marred by widespread fraud allegedly orchestrated by Galiwango and electoral commission.
However, court dismissed the petition with costs.
Speaking at the Court of Appeal, MP Galiwango said she is happy the election petition has been dismissed.
“I won the election with over 15,000 votes. How can I steal with such a margin? I am happy I have been exonerated. This was a win for the people of Mbale,” she told the press outside the court premises.
She added: “I thank them for voting me. I have gone through a lot. It has been a long process but I’m glad this has been sealed.”
