President Museveni has said he will meet with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party Caucus next week to discuss rising commodity prices.
“As we celebrate Easter, I know the issue of high prices for commodities, is disturbing our people,” Museveni said on Friday night in his Easter Message.
He added: “I will meet with Caucus next week and we discuss then I will address you on the matter. Happy Easter.”
On Thursday, the Minister of Trade Hon. David Bahati presented to parliament a statement on the rising prices of essential commodities in the country.
He said the price of petrol has increased by 13.2 percent in the past four months and by 35 percent during the last year.
The Price of laundry bar soap has increased by 41.8 percent between December 2021 and March 2022, and 72.7 percent in the last year.
According to Bahati, Uganda’s inflation has remained within the target of 5 percent and one of the lowest in the region despite the increase in prices.
Civil Society Organizations have since tasked the government to find both short-term and long-term solutions for the skyrocketing prices of commodities.
According to the CSOs, since the re-opening of the economy in January 2022, the country has experienced an increment in commodity prices of up to 100% for some commodities.
