Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda has refuted claims that government has been behind recent attacks on opposition MPs whose homes were hit by grenades.
In a period of a week, explosives confirmed by police to be hand grenades were thrown in homes of three opposition MPs Robert Kyagulanyi ‘Bobi Wine’, Allan Ssewanyana and Moses Kasibante.
All the three have since accused government of instigating the attacks as a way of weakening their protest against the proposed amendment of the Presidential age limit.
However, Prime Minister Rugunda told the press on Wednesday that the NRM government which liberated the country from regimes of assassinations can not be the same government behind attacks on political opponents.
“Since the bush war, the NRM condemned and made it clear that the issue of assassination could not be a method for us to use,” he said.
He said that this still remains government’s consistent position.
“Anybody harming or killing somebody for expressing different views can not be representing NRM or government. Therefore, government is not in anyway behind throwing of weaponry and grenades at these MPs,” the Prime Minister added.
He condemned the “cowardly acts”, adding that investigations are ongoing to establish who is responsible for the attacks.
