The Equal Opportunities Commission has asked Parliament to intervene into the increment of UPE funds allocated to a child under Universal Primary Education (UPE).

The commission noted that government’s allocation of Shs8000 to each UPE child per year is inadequate given the current economic conditions.

The remarks were made by the Principal Compliance Officer of the Equal opportunities Commission, Evans Jemba while taking members of parliament through compliance of gender and equity planning and budgeting at a training workshop held on Wednesday in Kampala.

The workshop was organized by Uganda Women Parliamentary Association (UWOPA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Mr. Jemba urged Parliament to recommend that the amount is revised every year to cater for the economic situation of the time.

“We understand that increasing this money at once is indeed a big challenge but we suggest that parliament recommends at least an increment of Shs500 per year in consideration of the economic challenges faced at the time,” Jemba said.

Jemba also asked members of parliament to demand for facilities for science education in most rural and hard to reach areas where the facilities are not available.

“Since we are promoting science education, we should consider equipping rural schools with science equipment because most of the secondary schools don’t have any equipment,” Jemba noted.
