A street vendor died in Kampala on Friday while running away from a Kampala Capital City Authority [KCCA] vehicle that was carrying enforcement officers.

KCCA spokesperson, Peter Hillary Kaujju, said Olivia Basemera who was vending her goods around Mukwano area in Nakivubo, started running when she spotted a KCCA vehicle at the Jinja Road Traffic Junction.

Kaujju said Basemera missed a step and fell into Nakivubo channel where she drowned.

He said the incident happened at 1pm around Mukwano, downtown Kampala.

“It’s reported that the lady spotted a vehicle for KCCA enforcement and the fact that she had been vending, she thought that people were going to run after her,” Kaujju said in a statement.

He added: “Unfortunately she took the wrong direction and plunged into the channel having missed a step.”

The body of the deceased was retrieved and taken to the city mortuary.

Kaujju said police has commenced investigations to establish exactly the circumstances surrounding the situation.

The authority extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
