Uganda will host the 2020 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) beach soccer championship.

According to football governing body, Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA), Uganda has been confirmed hosts of the top continent beach soccer tournament by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), following a decision taken by the CAF Executive Committee meeting in Accra, Ghana on Friday November 30.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo a CAF Executive Member and the head of the Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee was also present.

This will be the fourth edition of the tournament but sand Cranes will therefore automatically qualify as hosts and play at the final tournament for the first time.

FUFA first Vice President, Justus Mugisha couldn’t hide his excitement about the decision, he said they are now reaping from their efforts to promote the game.

“Our efforts in developing the game in Uganda are reaping fruits. It has been a great journey for beach soccer in this country. We have led on all fronts in the region in developing the game,” Mugisha said.

“We thank CAF for giving us this opportunity. We shall not disappoint,” added Mugisha.

On his part, Uganda Beach Soccer Association Chairman, Deo Mutabazi, described the developments as “memorable”.

“It is a great opportunity for Uganda to be selected as the next hosts of the AFCON Beach Soccer Finals. We shall be looking forward to hosting a memorable tournament for all the teams that will come to our country”, Mutabazi said.

Egypt is hosting this year’s final tournament but Uganda will not feature because it was knocked out by Ivory coast at the qualification stage.
