Uganda’s national women football team, Crested Cranes, have Thursday afternoon been knocked out of the ongoing Confederation of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) women championship in South Africa, after losing 2-0 to the hosts.

The East Africans who are playing at the tournament as a guest nation put up a surprise performance when they sailed into the semi finals beating some of the regional giants.

In group C, the Ugandans opened with a 4-3 win against Swaziland, before settling for a goalless draw with Namibia in their second encounter.

Coach Faridah Bulega’s team continued to embrace and signaled being a threat to the traditional teams in the tournament when they humbled last year’s defeated finalists Zimbabwe with a convincing 2-1 win on Monday September 17, thanks to Juliet Nalukenge and Tracy Akiror’s goals, which helped them progress to the semi finals with an unbeaten record.

The team posed a great challenge today at Port Elizabeth to defending champions and hosts Banyana Banyana of South Africa, with several attempts on goal, before conceding the two goals.

The Ugandans will Friday face Zambia who lost 1-0 to another guest nation Cameroon, for the third position of the tournament.
