Popular singer, also Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine together with aspiring MP for Arua Municipality, Kassiano Wadri and other MPs have been arrested, Police have confirmed.

It follows chaotic events that unfolded in Arua municipality on Monday evening where rowdy supporters of Wadri allegedly attacked the convoy of President Yoweri Museveni, resulting in the death of Yasin Kawuma, the driver of Bobi Wine’s vehicle.

Late on Monday night, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Josephine Angucia had disclosed in an interview with the press that 34 people including MPs were arrested after the incident. It has also emerged at the time that Mityana Municipality MP, Francis Zaake had been arrested.

On Tuesday, Police revealed in a statement that three MPs including Bobi Wine, Gerald Karuhanga (Ntungamo Municipality) and Paul Mwiru (Jinja East) are also under police custody. The other person being held is former MP for Makindye East, Mike Mabikke all of whom were in Kassiano Wadri’s camp.

Police Spokesperson, SSP Emilian Kayima said that supporters of Wadri fueled by groups led by the said MPs attacked the motorcade of the President.

“Supporters of Kassiano Wadri with imported support groups led by MPs Bobi Wine, Francis Zaake, Paul Mwiru, Gerald Karuhanga and former MP, Mike Mabikke obstructed and violently attacked the Presidential motorcade,” Kayima said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Police Spokesperson said that the MPs are aiding investigations into what transpired. According to Kayima, Bobi Wine was discovered by Police in the ceiling of his hotel room where he is believed to have spent the night.

He said that during the attack, one of the vehicles bearing a Presidential court of arms had its windscreen smashed.

Police says security officers were forced to intervene and use teargas and bullets to contain the situation from further escalating. Police has also now confirmed that the person who died was identified as Kawuma Yasin and that he was killed by a gun shot.

His body has since been taken to Arua hospital for postmortem.

Kayima cautioned the public against engaging in criminal activity that intends to obstruct or attack the Presidential motorcade which he said contravenes with the Traffic and Road Safety Act, as well as the Penal Code Act.

Police say that they are ready to ensure law and calm on polling day, tomorrow.
