One person died on Sunday morning after a motor accident along the Kabale – Katuna road involving a bus and a trailer.
The fatal accident occurred at around 5:30am on Sunday morning at a place called Kyonyo between Kabale town and Katuna border town.
Police say a bus Reg No UBA 067 Y belonging to the Modern Coast company had a head-on collision with a trailer Reg No T467BFX. The bus was from Kenya heading to Kigali Rwanda while the trailer was from Katuna to Kampala.
The incident is said to have occured at the exact point where part of the road recently caved in due to landslides.
Samson Onyango Agutu, 24, a Kenyan national who was the turn man, died on spot, according to a Monday statement by the Elly Matte, the Police Spokesperson for Kigezi Region.
Four other people who were aboard the bus were seriously injured. They have been identified as Phionah Kamikaz, 28, Hamina Jasibu, 24, both Rwandan nationals as well as Eridoni Mageto, 24, (bus conductor) and Peter Omboga, 60, both Kenyan nationals.
Some other passengers sustained minor injuries.
“Police responded swiftly and the injured were rushed to Kabale referral hospital and fire brigade struggled and removed the bus driver known as David Nyaga of Kenyan nationality who was stuck in the wreckage,” Elly Matte said.
Matte pointed out the hilly terrain in the area as well as fatigue (by drivers) and the mist which often covers that part of the country between 4am and 6am as possible causes of the accident. But he said investigations are ongoing to establish the actual cause of the accident.
“Our drivers should always be extra careful while on the road. they should take road safety precautions very seriously so that we avoid circumstances where out innocent civilians end up losing their lives,” he cautioned.
