Angella Kayihura, the wife of detained former Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura has dispelled reports made in the press claiming that lawyers Caleb Alaka and Evans Ochieng will be representing her husband in court.

Earlier today, the Daily Monitor reported in an article titled ‘Lawyers Fight to Defend Kayihura’ reported that city lawyers; Caleb Alaka and Evans Ochieng “told Daily Monitor yesterday that Gen Kayihura invited them to meet him in detention at Makindye Military Barracks last Saturday to give them instructions to represent him in court”.

According to the article, the lawyers said they expected Gen Kayihura to be produced in the military court at Makindye today.

“It is highly possible that Gen Kayihura will be charged before court tomorrow (today) but we, as his lawyers, don’t know yet the charges against him,” Alaka is quoted to have told the newspaper.

He further is quoted as have said that should Kayihura fail to be produced in court today, they (lawyers) would apply to court for a habeas corpus, an application made in court seeking orders to compel authorities to produce a suspect who is deemed to be unfairly detained.

However, Kayihura’s wife has now come out to describe the claims made by lawyer Alaka as untrue.

“This is to inform the general public that neither Gen Kale Kayihura nor any member of his family has met, talked to or instructed Mr Evans Ochieng or Mr Caleb Alaka or their law firms to represent Gen Kayihura as alleged in the media at all,” Mrs Angella Kayihura said in a press statement on Monday.

She said that Kayihura’s lawyers are M/S Kampala Associated Advocates.
Kayihura’s wife further refuted the allegation that the lawyers had been given instructions to file a habeas corpus.

“To date, neither Gen Kayihura nor any member of his family have instructed our lawyer to file any application in any court for any purpose,” the wife to Gen Kayihura said.

Statements to that effect are false and should be ignored, she added.

Contrary to some media reports in recent days, Mrs Angella Kayihura also said that Kayihura’s lawyers and his family have todate been granted unfettered access to him.

Kayihura has been held at the Makindye military barracks since Wednesday last week when the UPDF flew him from his upcountry home in Lyantonde district.

This was a day after he had been summoned by the Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi on matters the UPDF is hesitant to disclose to the public.

This website understands that the General was questioned on issues relating to acts of espionage, illegal transfer of weapons and the killing of his assistant, Andrew Felix Kaweesi who was assassinated in March last year.
