Museveni Terms Abiriga Murder Senseless, Orders Security to Expedite Hunt for Assailants

President Yoweri Museveni has instructed security agencies to expeditiously hunt down the killers of former Arua municipality MP, Ibrahim Abiriga.

The NRM legislator and spirited supporter of President Museveni was gunned down together with his bodyguard on Friday evening in Kawanda in Wakiso district near Kampala. The two were driving home from work.

His death has shaken the country, with both politicians and the public expressing grief while many are pondering what could have caused his murder.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, President Museveni has termed Abiriga’s assassination as “senseless”.

“I have received news about the senseless killing of Arua Municipality MP, Hon Ibrahim Abiriga, and his bodyguard on the outskirts of Kampala this evening. May Hon Abiriga’s soul rest in peace,” he said.

“I have tasked security agencies to expeditiously find these killers and the nation will be updated soon,” Museveni further said.

He has given reassurance that such incidents of urban criminality are going to stop.

The incident comes against the backdrop of rampant cases of kidnaps across the country, prompting women and youth activists to protest urging Police to protect them. At the same time, Police is yet to solve the assassination of its former Spokesperson, AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi which occured a year ago in a manner similar to that of Abiriga.

Recently, Museveni vowed that his government would crack down on the spate of organized crime the same way it did with the Joseph Kony led Lords Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency in Northern Uganda together with other incidents of terrorism.

He also said that government was still committed to its plan to install CCTV cameras on streets in major towns to beef up surveillance.

Security agencies led by the Chieftaincy of Military Agency (CMI) recently produced Susan Magara’s suspected killers in court.
