Ten people working as agents for telecom companies have been remanded to Luzira prison for selling simcards that were later used by the killers of Susan Magara.

The 10 suspects were arraigned on Friday before the Makindye grade one magistrate’s court and that of Mwanga II and charged with registering simcards using other people’s national identity numbers.

The proceedings at the Makindye court were presided over by Grade one magistrate, Sarah Namusobya.

In addition, the suspects including women were charged with obtaining registration of sim cards by false pretence.

Five suspects were charged at Makindye and five others at Mwanga II by Grade One Magistrate Esther Nyadoi. The suspects have been remanded to pirosn until May 28.

Susan Magara, a 28-year-old accountant was kidnapped and later murdered in February this year. Her abductors are said to have picked her up in Rubaga as he left the gym.

They are, however, said to have used unregistered simcards to contact Susan’s family for ransom. At the funeral, family members said that over 15 simcards had been used to contact them but that none of these could be traced back to the users.

Susan Magara’s death brought the issues of security surrounding telephone communication in sharp focus, causing UCC to stop telecom companies from issuing new simcards as well as swapping until they can acquire systems to verify user details.

But the ban on the sale of new simcards has since been lifted after the process was streamlined.
