The man who allegedly attempted an attack on Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, Rt Rev Wilberforce Luwalira during the Easter Sunday service says he was trying to hand over items of witchcraft imposed on him.

35-year-old Kaddu Herbert, a resident of Makay Zone was arrested by Police on Sunday after he charged towards Bishop Luwalira inside Namirembe Cathedral in Kampala.

Video footage captured during the moment of the suspected attack shows Kaddu running through the aisle dressed in a piece of bark cloth while holding a stick in his right hand. However, he fell off while he tried to jump over the furtniture at the altar where the Bishop was standing. The priests and police officers then rushed in and dragged the defiant man out of the church.

The Deputy Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Onyango said on Monday that upon interrogation, Kaddu told Police that the piece of bark cloth he was wearing along with the stick were fetishes forcefully given to him by his family but that he has not noticed any improvement these items have helped make in his life.

He was in the process of handing them over to the Bishop, he told Police.

“When we asked him why he ran towards the Bishop rather than walk and hand them over, he said that he feared security would arrest him before reaching the Bishop,” Onyango said.

On Monday, Police conducted a search at the suspect’s home to find out whether there are other items that could help with the investigation.

Onyango revealed that Police have already opened a case against Kaddu and that he will be charged for disturbing the peace of a religious assembly and threatening violence.

“We hope that by tomorrow [Tuesday], our file will be ready and we shall take it to the State Attorney for perusal,” Onyango said.

Meanwhile, Police have confirmed that the suspect is normal and not mentally sick as reports had stated on Sunday. Some of the relatives to Kaddu had initially alleged that he was mentally unstable which prompted Police to subject him to a medical test.

According to Onyango, the doctors confirmed that Kaddu is in normal mental state.
