KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda has been recognised on the global stage after being selected among only five countries worldwide for the Islamic University of Madinah Distinguished Alumni Award (Fifth Edition, 1447 AH / 2026), a prestigious honour celebrating outstanding contributions by graduates of the institution.
The award was presented during the 62nd Graduation Ceremony of the Islamic University of Madinah held on April 27, 2026, under the patronage of Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Governor of the Al-Madinah Region.
Uganda’s recognition comes through Ambassador Dr Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu, Uganda’s envoy to the Republic of Sudan, who was selected for the Social Impact Award from a global alumni network of more than 150,000 graduates.
The award category honours alumni who have made significant contributions to society through community service, volunteerism, and humanitarian work.
Dr Ssemuddu was recognised for what organisers described as “exceptional academic excellence, da’wah work, community service, and exemplary representation of the University and its alumni across the world.”
In a statement linked to the recognition, organisers said: “The Social Impact Award is granted to alumni who have made a clear and meaningful contribution to society through community service, volunteer work, and humanitarian initiatives.”
Uganda was listed alongside France, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Suriname, and São Tomé and Príncipe in this year’s global selection of honourees.
Other award categories included Professional Achievement and Sustainable Development, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Scientific Impact, and Intellectual Awareness.
Officials said the recognition highlights Uganda’s growing visibility in diplomacy, scholarship, and humanitarian service, with Dr Ssemuddu praised for his role in advancing education, charity work, and international engagement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the award as a significant national milestone, calling it a reflection of “faith-driven leadership and global respect.”
As celebrations continue ahead of the formal ceremony in Madinah, officials say the honour reinforces Uganda’s presence within global networks of academic and professional excellence.
