President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has held discussions with the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at State Lodge, Nakasero.
The talks centred on Uganda’s efforts to build a resilient health system, with emphasis on sustainable financing, promoting local pharmaceutical manufacturing, and advancing public health insurance to guarantee long-term access to essential health services.
Dr. Tedros, who is in Uganda for a working visit, also met staff at the WHO Uganda office, where he commended their dedication to the country’s health agenda amid global challenges facing the organisation.
“The ongoing reprioritisation process is being conducted transparently, with fairness and humanity,” Dr. Tedros told staff, adding that WHO remains committed to preserving jobs, especially in country offices where its presence is most critical.
He further reassured the Uganda team of WHO’s continued support, saying: “WHO will emerge sharper, stronger, independent, and more relevant to the world.”
Dr. Tedros expressed gratitude for the warm reception in Uganda, noting: “I’m truly grateful to each and every one of you, for your dedication to serving communities across Uganda and your contribution to our #HealthForAll mission. You make me so #ProudToBeWHO.”
The meeting comes at a time when Uganda continues to invest in health infrastructure, human resource development, and local manufacturing of medicines and vaccines to reduce reliance on imports and improve access to affordable healthcare.
