Makerere University is mourning the passing of Professor Livingstone Serwadda Luboobi, a distinguished academic and former Vice Chancellor who led Uganda’s oldest and most prestigious institution from 2004 to 2009.
In a message of condolence, the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, described Prof. Luboobi as “a distinguished Professor of Mathematics” and a transformational leader who steered Makerere through a critical period of change and growth.
“I have received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Professor Livingstone Luboobi, former Vice Chancellor of Makerere University. His contributions to academia and leadership at Makerere will be remembered with great respect and admiration,” Prof. Nawangwe said. “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Makerere University also issued an official statement, saying, “We mourn the passing of former Vice Chancellor Professor Livingstone Serwadda Luboobi. May his soul rest in peace.”
During his tenure as Vice Chancellor, Prof. Luboobi played a pivotal role in strengthening Makerere’s academic structures, research output, and institutional reputation.
He is remembered not only for his contributions to the field of mathematics but also for his dedication to higher education and public service in Uganda.
