The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has appointed Colonel Francis Obita Aragamoi as the new Deputy Contingent Commander of its forces deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). He succeeds Colonel Christopher Columbus Tumwine.
The official handover ceremony took place at the contingent headquarters in Mogadishu and was presided over by Brigadier General Joseph Ssemwanga, the Contingent Commander.
Brig Gen Ssemwanga praised Col Tumwine’s leadership, particularly highlighting his instrumental role in reclaiming the Sabiid-Anole Forward Operating Base from Al-Shabaab insurgents.
“Our presence here underscores Uganda’s unwavering commitment to Pan-Africanism and to promoting peace and stability across the continent. A secure Somalia is vital to the progress of all African nations,” he said.
Col Tumwine reflected with pride on the accomplishments achieved under his command and thanked the UPDF leadership for their continued guidance and support.
In his remarks, Col Aragamoi pledged to carry forward the mission’s progress. “I intend to build on the foundation laid and maintain momentum in achieving our strategic objectives,” he said.
The handover event was attended by unit commanders, contingent staff officers, component leaders, department heads, and both senior and junior officers.
