HENGELO, Netherlands — Uganda’s Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai delivered a commanding performance at the FBK Games, winning the women’s 3000m steeplechase in 9:07.79, the third-fastest time in the world this year.

Competing at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet in Hengelo, Chemutai wasted no time asserting dominance, clocking 2:57.94 at the 1000m mark and 6:03.33 at 2000m. She crossed the finish line more than 13 seconds ahead of her closest rival.

The 24-year-old Tokyo 2020 gold medallist was in a class of her own throughout the race, reaffirming her status as a top contender ahead of the Paris Olympics.

Ethiopia’s Wosane Asefa, just 18 years old, ran a personal best of 9:20.83 to secure second place, while Kenya’s Caren Chebet finished third in 9:22.35.

“I felt strong from the start and just focused on running my own race,” said Chemutai after her win. “This is a good sign for the season ahead.”

The result marks another milestone in Chemutai’s stellar career and signals a return to peak form after injury setbacks in 2023 and 2024.

Chemutai’s time not only secures her place among the world’s best in 2025 but also sends a clear message ahead of the upcoming global championships.
