Munyonyo – Uganda’s security forces have foiled what is believed to be a planned terror attack targeting the Martyrs Day celebrations, after Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) counter-terrorism unit intercepted and neutralised two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale suburb of Kampala, early Tuesday morning.

According to Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, one of the terrorists was a female suicide bomber equipped with powerful explosives. The intelligence-led operation was executed just hours before thousands of pilgrims were expected to gather at Munyonyo Catholic Shrine for the Martyrs Day commemoration.

“It was an intelligence-led operation, and the security services are on heightened alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption,” Col Magezi said in a statement.

“The general public is urged to remain calm but vigilant and report to the security services any suspicious individuals, objects, or activities for immediate attention,” he added.

Explosion Confirmed on Motorcycle

Earlier this morning, an explosion rocked the area near the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine, causing panic among early-arriving pilgrims. Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba, who arrived on the scene shortly after the blast, confirmed that the explosion originated from a motorcycle.

“There has been an explosion here,” said IGP Byakagaba. “The most important message to our people is that they should remain calm. The security forces are present and in control of the situation.”

He further clarified that no bystanders or pilgrims were harmed in the incident.

“So far, no one nearby has been injured or killed apart from those on the motorcycle,” he added. “It’s too early to give any further details, but we believe the explosion was related to the suspects we intercepted.”

Scene Preserved, Area Under Lockdown

Security forces, including police, military police and counterterrorism officers, have since cordoned off the area and restricted access to the Munyonyo Shrine, a major pilgrimage site, as June 3rd celebrations, which honour Uganda’s 45 Christian Martyrs, get underway.

In light of the attempted attack, security has been significantly heightened around both the Munyonyo Catholic Shrine and the Namugongo Anglican Martyrs Shrine. Police and military personnel are conducting thorough checks and surveillance across all entry points.

“We ask the public to remain aware of their environment and report anything suspicious. The Martyrs Day celebrations will go on, and we assure the public of their safety,” IGP Byakagaba reiterated.

Martyrs Day, one of the biggest religious events in East Africa, draws thousands of Christian pilgrims annually from across the continent. The government has emphasised that all security measures are in place to ensure peaceful commemorations despite today’s scare.
