Airtel Uganda, the country’s first anti-spam network, has today reaffirmed its commitment to digital inclusion by handing over UGX 37.9 billion to the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund (UCUSAF).

This contribution, a 2% share of the company’s gross revenue for the 2024 financial year, represents an 11.4% increase from last year’s support.

The symbolic handover took place at the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) headquarters in Bugolobi. Airtel Uganda’s Managing Director, Mr. Soumendra Sahu, described the payment not just as a regulatory requirement, but a strategic investment in Uganda’s digital future.

“This goes beyond compliance,” Mr. Sahu stated. “It reflects our vision of a Uganda where every citizen, regardless of location, can access safe, fast, and reliable digital communication. From pioneering Uganda’s first Spam Alert service to investing in rural connectivity, we are committed to meaningful progress.”

Airtel Uganda’s contribution is made in accordance with the Uganda Communications Act and the company’s national telecommunications license, which mandates annual contributions to UCUSAF. The fund, managed by UCC, is aimed at extending communication services to underserved and unserved areas across the country, particularly rural schools, health centres, and hard-to-reach communities.

Hon. Nyombi Thembo, the UCC Executive Director, welcomed the contribution, applauding Airtel Uganda for its consistency and innovation.

“Achieving universal access is not a government effort alone—it takes industry-wide commitment,” said Hon. Thembo. “Airtel’s leadership in digital innovation, especially their new Spam Alert service, speaks to their public safety values and long-term vision.”

Mr. Thembo emphasised the role of UCUSAF in driving socio-economic transformation through digital empowerment, noting that the fund is instrumental in bridging Uganda’s urban-rural digital divide.

Airtel Uganda remains one of the largest and most consistent contributors to UCUSAF. Mr. Sahu attributed this to the trust of customers, support from the Government of Uganda, and partnerships across the ICT ecosystem.

“We’re grateful to our customers and stakeholders. Their support allows us to invest boldly in Uganda’s connected future,” he added.
