In a gripping finale that brought fans to their feet and etched itself into Ugandan rugby history, the Black Pirates Rugby Club emerged as the 2025 Nile Special Rugby Premiership champions after a dramatic 44-23 extra-time win over the resilient Jinja Hippos.
Played at the iconic Kings Park Arena, the showdown was more than just a championship decider—it was a battle of grit, heart, and unyielding hunger. The match ended 23-23 in regular time, setting the stage for a breathtaking final chapter in extra time, where the Pirates unleashed their full might to secure their third Premiership title.
Sponsored by Roke Telkom, the Black Pirates delivered a performance that reflected both precision and passion. The game opened with intensity, as Isaac Massa’s early break led to a penalty successfully slotted by William Nkore. But the Hippos, never ones to back down, responded through a bulldozing try from captain Tonny Kadhambi, signalling their readiness for the contest.

Momentum swung back and forth, with each side refusing to relent. As the clock ticked down, Pirates’ captain Ivan Magomu powered over the try line in a moment that lifted the home crowd. His conversion, however, went wide, and with the scores tied, the game marched into extra time.
There, the Pirates found another gear.
Jones Kamiza, Timothy Kisiga, and Haruna Muhammad each crossed the try line in a relentless show of strength and strategy, turning the tied contest into a commanding 44-23 triumph. Kings Park erupted as the final whistle confirmed the Pirates’ status as kings, not just of Kings Park, but of Ugandan rugby.

“This was not just about winning. It was about showing Uganda what belief, preparation, and unity can achieve,” said Joseph Byaruhanga, Brand and Marketing Manager at Roke Telkom, who have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the Pirates throughout their journey. “At Roke Telkom, we’re not just proud — we’re inspired. This win reflects everything we believe in: resilience, teamwork, and pushing boundaries.”
Byaruhanga emphasised that their partnership goes far beyond sponsorship. “We believe in the transformative power of sport and how it unites communities, instils discipline, and builds future leaders. By supporting the Pirates, we’re investing in the spirit of local excellence and helping foster a culture of ambition and national pride.”

Rugby in Uganda continues to grow as a symbol of strength, strategy, and community. The Pirates’ victory is a beacon of what is possible when purpose meets preparation, and it underscores the deep connection between sport and the broader ambitions of the nation.
With the trophy back in their hands and the roar of Kings Park behind them, the Black Pirates have once again proven they are a force to reckon with — and champions not only by skill but by spirit.
