A night of soul, sophistication, and smooth saxophone swept through the Kampala Serena Hotel on Saturday, May 10, 2025, as Grammy-winning legend Kirk Whalum and Uganda’s jazz maestro Isaiah Katumwa headlined the debut edition of the dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival.

The sold-out event fused world-class music with high-style elegance, instantly making it a landmark on Uganda’s cultural calendar.

The evening started with a fiery performance from the Black Roots Academy of Soul and jazz veteran Tshaka Mayanja. Their rich blend of R&B and jazz classics set the tone for a night that was as much a tribute to music history as it was a celebration of live artistry.

Returning home after six years abroad, Isaiah Katumwa electrified the crowd with his iconic track “My Joy,” stirring hearts and feet alike. Speaking emotionally about his homecoming, Katumwa said, “This festival is a homecoming. I thank dfcu Bank for giving me this platform and for supporting my journey as I prepare to celebrate 30 years in jazz.”

Then came the crescendo—Kirk Whalum took the stage with the warmth, grace, and mastery that have made him a global icon. Blending gospel, jazz, and powerful storytelling, he moved the audience from rapt silence to roaring applause. His soul-lifting worship session just before midnight drew a standing ovation and brought the night to a spiritual close.

“Kampala has welcomed me with such warmth,” Whalum shared. “It’s an honour to perform here again, and I’m grateful to dfcu Bank for making this extraordinary night possible.”

Beyond the music, the evening dazzled with glamour. Guests arrived in high fashion, sipped and mingled in refined spaces, and soaked in curated experiences that made the festival not just a concert, but a cultural moment.

dfcu Bank CEO Charles Mudiwa described the festival as the bank’s vision for more than music: “At dfcu, we believe in creating experiences that inspire. The dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival connects people through music, community, and shared joy.”

With its next edition already in the works, dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival promises to return even bigger in 2026, solidifying its place as a premier celebration of African elegance and global sound.
