Mukono – The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) on Monday kicked off a six-day training for 284 Enumerators at Collins Hotel in Mukono, marking a significant milestone in preparations for the upcoming Uganda Aquaculture Census 2025.

While officially opening the training session, the Acting Executive Director of UBOS, Dr. Vincent Fred Ssenono, speaking on behalf of Executive Director Dr. Chris Mukiza, urged enumerators to demonstrate professionalism, discipline, and teamwork to ensure a successful data collection exercise.

“This Census comes at a time when demand for accurate data is at its highest,” Dr. Ssenono said. “It is critical that you exhibit high-quality data collection skills and uphold ethical standards in the field to guarantee the credibility and reliability of the results.”

The training is designed to build the capacity of field personnel in preparation for nationwide data collection across Uganda’s aquaculture sector. Enumerators are being equipped with knowledge on data collection tools, methodologies, use of digital technology, and ethical practices, with a focus on confidentiality and integrity.

Facilitators for the training include experts who previously underwent a rigorous Training of Trainers (ToT) session held from April 24th to 28th at Jinja Nile Resort. Upon completion of the current training, enumerators will take an oath of office and secrecy, after which they will be deployed across all aquaculture-active districts in Uganda.

The Uganda Aquaculture Census 2025 aims to provide comprehensive and accurate statistics on the country’s aquaculture sector. The data will cover the number and types of aquaculture establishments—such as fish ponds, pens, cages, tanks, and small farm reservoirs—production volumes, technologies used, socio-economic profiles of operators, and environmental impacts.

UBOS is working in close collaboration with Local Government officials, including District Planners and District Fisheries Officers, to ensure full coverage of aquaculture activities nationwide.

This Census underscores UBOS’ mandate as Uganda’s national statistics office, charged with coordinating and overseeing the National Statistical System (NSS). The data collected will inform evidence-based planning, policy formulation, and resource allocation, particularly in the agriculture and fisheries sectors.

The Census is being conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening Uganda’s aquaculture value chain through accurate and timely data.

UBOS has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of statistical production and dissemination and has called on all aquaculture operators to cooperate fully by providing accurate information to the enumerators.

The Uganda Aquaculture Census 2025 is expected to play a key role in guiding national strategies aimed at boosting food security, sustainable resource use, and economic development through the growth of the aquaculture sector.
