Jinja — The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced new leadership appointments for Uganda’s premier military education institutions.
Brigadier General Alex Opolot Olupot has been named the new Commandant of the National Defence College – Uganda (NDC-U) in Jinja. He takes over from Major General Francis Okello, the founding Commandant of the institution established in 2022. Brig Gen Olupot previously served as the UPDF’s Joint Staff Training and Doctrine officer.
Meanwhile, Brigadier General Michael Kabango, currently the Chief of Staff – Land Forces, has been appointed Commandant of the Senior Command and Staff College (SCSC), Kimaka, also based in Jinja. He replaces Major General George Igumba, who will retire later this year.

Both Maj Gen Okello and Maj Gen Igumba are scheduled for retirement following more than four decades of exemplary military service. Throughout their careers, they held various command and staff roles and completed all levels of professional military education. Their dedication and resilience have left a lasting mark on the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and serve as an inspiration for the next generation of military leaders.
In a statement released by Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA)/UPDF extended its appreciation to the outgoing generals and congratulated the newly appointed commandants.
“We are confident that Brigadier Generals Opolot and Kabango possess the strategic vision and leadership to elevate UPDF’s elite training institutions to even greater heights,” Col Magezi said.
