The State Minister for the Environment, Beatrice Anywar, has inaugurated the 9th Board of Directors of the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) following their approval by Cabinet.
The National Environment Act Cap 181 provides that the National Environment Management Authority shall have a Board, which shall be the governing body of the Authority.
The Board is appointed by the Minister for Water and Environment with the approval of Cabinet for a three-year term. Following the end of the tenure of the 8th Board, the Minister, with the approval of the cabinet, appointed the 9th Board, whose term commenced.
The new Board members pledged their commitment to abide by the laws in the execution of their duties.
These will have an induction training, where they will be made abreast with the current state of affairs at the Authority, informed about the policies, manuals and charters of the Authority, as well as corporate governance training.
The 9th Board comprises Prof. James Okot-Okumu – Chairperson, Dr. John Ekure – Member, Dr. Callist Tindimugaya – Member. Hon Eng. Katwiremu Yorokamu Bategana – Member, Hajjat Aphwa Kawaase Sebyala – Member, Mr. Can Amos Lapenga – Member, Mr. Chemonges Jimmy Kuka – Member.Ms. Sarah Kagingo – Member, Mr. Nasur Lokeris Modester – Member and Dr. Barirega Akankwasah – Board Secretary.
Speaking at the inauguration, Anywar commended the outgoing Board for its dedicated service and significant contributions to environmental management in Uganda.
She emphasized the crucial role of the incoming Board in strengthening environmental policies, promoting sustainable development, and ensuring compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
The Executive Director of NEMA, Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, welcomed the new Board members and expressed confidence in their ability to provide the necessary leadership to advance Uganda’s environmental agenda.
He reiterated NEMA Management’s commitment to working with the Board in fostering sustainable environmental management and ensuring compliance with the National Environment Act, Cap. 181.
The Board plays a pivotal role in providing strategic oversight and policy guidance to NEMA, ensuring the implementation of Uganda’s environmental laws and regulations.
