Airtel Uganda, in partnership with the Buganda Kingdom, has officially launched the 2025 Kabaka Birthday Run kit at Bulange-Mengo, the headquarters of the Buganda Kingdom.
The 12th edition of the Kabaka Birthday Run is set to take place on April 6, 2025, under the theme “Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child.” This annual event celebrates the birthday of King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and remains dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS to eliminate the epidemic in Uganda by 2030.
For over a decade, Airtel Uganda has been a key sponsor of the run, continuously supporting efforts to uplift communities not only in Buganda but across the country.

Airtel Uganda’s Commitment to the Fight Against HIV/AIDS
Speaking at the unveiling, Airtel Uganda’s Human Resource Manager, Flavia Lwanga, emphasised the company’s pride in supporting the Kabaka Birthday Run.
“This year marks 11 years of partnership with the Buganda Kingdom, a journey we deeply value. Through this collaboration, we have focused on improving lives and addressing societal challenges that affect our communities,” Lwanga stated.
She reaffirmed Airtel Uganda’s commitment to the HIV/AIDS fight, highlighting that since 2019, the initiative has been instrumental in raising awareness and mobilizing resources to combat the epidemic.

“Under the theme ‘Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child,’ we call upon men to take the lead in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Their role is critical in curbing the spread of the virus and protecting the next generation. This is not just a campaign but a movement that aligns with Airtel Uganda’s vision of creating lasting social impact,” she added.
Uganda’s Progress in the HIV/AIDS Fight
Recent data from the Uganda AIDS Commission (2024) shows notable progress in the country’s fight against HIV/AIDS the national HIV prevalence rate has declined from 18% in the 1990s to 5.1% in 2024, new HIV infections have reduced from 68,000 annually to 38,000 and AIDS-related deaths have dropped from 30,000 to 20,000 per year.

These improvements underscore the impact of combined efforts from the government, cultural institutions, and private sector partners like Airtel Uganda.
Buganda Kingdom Applauds the Initiative
Officiating the event, Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, praised the positive impact of the Kabaka Birthday Run and commended His Majesty the Kabaka for his foresight in spearheading the initiative.

“Our commitment to eliminating HIV/AIDS in Uganda by 2030 is yielding results. The data from UNAIDS and the Uganda AIDS Commission shows that we are making progress, and this motivates us to continue pushing forward,” Mayiga stated.
He also acknowledged Airtel Uganda’s unwavering support over the past 11 years, urging Ugandans to rally behind brands that contribute to social change.
“The Buganda Kingdom appreciates Airtel Uganda for their commitment. We encourage our people to support them by using their services, as they have shown dedication to improving lives. This partnership is invaluable, and we pledge to sustain it for the benefit of our communities,” he added.
Owek. Hon. Prof. Twaha Kigongo Kaawaase, First Deputy Prime Minister of Buganda Kingdom, said this run is special as the Kabaka turns 70. “We urge everyone in Buganda to gather at the Lubiri for a grand celebration,” he adds.

How to Participate in the 2025 Kabaka Birthday Run
The Kabaka Birthday Run kit is priced at UGX 20,000 and is available for purchase at select Airtel Uganda shops, including Airtel Shop New Taxi Park, Shoprite – Ben Kiwanuka and Thobani Centre.
Participants can also make payments via Airtel Money and pick up their kits from any of the listed locations.
On his part, Owek. Ssalongo Robert Sserwanga, Minister for Youth, Sports and Arts in Buganda Kingdom, informed the public that the run will meet international standards and that revelers should expect professionalism.

A Call to Action
With global funding for HIV/AIDS care facing challenges, Lwanga called upon Ugandans to actively support local efforts in the fight against the epidemic.
“We must unite as a people to mobilize resources and sustain the fight against HIV/AIDS. I urge all Ugandans to participate in the 12th edition of the Kabaka Birthday Run. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and help Uganda achieve an HIV-free future,” she concluded.
