Uganda is mourning the sudden passing of Mrs. Elizabeth Gabona, the former Director for Higher Education and Deputy Chairperson of the Education Service Commission.

The news of her death has left many in shock, including Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, who described her as a “moving encyclopedia on education matters” and a mentor who dedicated her life to shaping Uganda’s education sector.

Tayebwa, who served with Gabona on the Makerere University Council, recalled her recent visit to his office to discuss her retirement plans, noting that she appeared to be in good health.

“She was like a mother to me,” he said in a heartfelt message.

Pastor and activist Martin Ssempa also paid tribute, lamenting the loss of her vast knowledge.

“When an African elder dies, it is like a library burning down,” he remarked, calling for a campaign to document the experiences and wisdom of senior citizens.

Gabona’s legacy in education and mentorship has left an indelible mark on Uganda, with colleagues and former students celebrating her immense contributions. Her passing is a significant loss to the education fraternity.
