The Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, has officially released the 2024 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results, marking a historic milestone as the first cohort of candidates under the New Lower Secondary Competence-Based Curriculum receives their results.

Speaking at the release event, the Minister acknowledged the transition to the new system, which was rolled out in 2020, as a significant step in Uganda’s education sector.

She also noted that UNEB conducted two sets of exams—one under the old curriculum and another under the new—to accommodate over 10,000 learners who had to sit for exams under the previous system.

“We praise God in a special way that we are finally releasing the results of the first cohort of candidates under the new lower secondary curriculum,” she said.

A New Era for Secondary Education

The Minister commended the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) for successfully implementing the competence-based curriculum and urged UNEB to ensure schools adhere to assessment guidelines.

“I ask UNEB to institute a robust training, monitoring, and evaluation system to ensure that schools comply with the guidelines in continuous assessment and project work assessment,” she emphasised.

Prof. Celestino Obua, UNEB chairperson, lauded the curriculum’s positive impact on students’ learning abilities.

“We can say with complete confidence that this is a good curriculum. The learners have more confidence, can communicate better, have developed research and project skills, and have learned how to learn,” he said.

He also assured the public that the transition of these learners to the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) has been well planned, with substantial changes made to the UACE curriculum to align with the new learning approach.

Commitment to Quality Education

The First Lady reiterated the government’s commitment to delivering quality education, highlighting UNEB’s ISO Certification as proof of adherence to high standards.

“This should give assurance to the public that UNEB is committed to the observance of quality processes in executing its mandate,” she stated.

The Minister of State for Higher Education, Dr. John C. Muyingo, described the release of results under the new curriculum as one of the most significant achievements in the education sector this year.
