Mao Challenges Opposition to Stop Pursuing “Narrow Interests”, Build Coalition

Democratic Party (DP) President, Nobert Mao speaking to the press on Tuesday

The Democratic Party (DP) President, Nobert Mao has challenged the opposition political parties to lay aside “narrow interests” and merge efforts to form an alliance that will remove President Yoweri Museveni from power.

Mao said that the opposition should begin building a strong coalition as opposed to the one formed prior 2016 elections which was delayed and later weakened by individual interests.

The DP President told a press conference on Tuesday that he believes that a timely formation of the alliance ahead of the 2021 elections will help streamline individual roles in the struggle to change government.

He said that DP was committed to the coalition before rallying other parties to join hands.

“I reiterate our total commitment to the unity of the democracy seeking forces in our country. The time has come to rise above our personal ambitions and narrow interests and embrace the challenge of building a viable alliance capable of dislodging the Museveni regime,” Mao noted.

He likened the pursuit of change in Uganda to building a fire saying that “each group can use the little firewood at its disposal to start its own little fire to keep its members warm for a while”.

“But individually we each don’t have enough firewood to last the cold night ahead. However, if we put our firewood in one heap we can keep the fire burning through the cold night,” he added.

During its coming National Executive Committee meeting, Democratic Party will table a bold proposal for a new national alliance of democracy seeking forces, he said.

“That is the only way to realise the dream of change that millions of Ugandans yearn for”.

He said that the opposition has been busy held up in secondary battles and abandoned the primary cause – the struggle for change in our country.
