Francistown, Botswana | October 9, 2025 — The Uganda Cranes boosted their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Botswana 1–0 in a tense Group F encounter played at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium.

Forward Jude Ssemugabi scored the game’s only goal in the 54th minute, rising highest to head home from a perfectly delivered corner. The crucial strike earned Uganda three points and kept their qualification dream alive with just one fixture remaining.

The Cranes showed tactical discipline and composure throughout the match, effectively managing Botswana’s aerial threat and long balls. Despite a late surge from the hosts, Uganda’s defence held firm to secure a vital away win — their sixth of the campaign — taking their tally to 18 points.

Returning goalkeeper Denis Onyango, who came out of international retirement after four years, expressed deep gratitude and optimism after the match.

“First of all, I have to thank the team for welcoming me back. After four years away, being trusted to contribute again means a lot,” said Onyango. “Whether I play or not, I’m committed to supporting the team. We’ve given ourselves a chance with 18 points, and if we can reach the playoffs, it will be great for Uganda. The key now is to stay focused as we prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations.”

Head Coach Paul Put praised his players for their resilience, particularly given the difficult travel logistics and short preparation time.

“We knew Botswana would be tough — they’re strong and dangerous with long balls — but we stayed organised,” said Put. “The boys showed great character. This victory was deserved because they fought hard from start to finish.”

He also credited Onyango’s influence, noting that his leadership brought calm and confidence to the squad.

“Denis’s experience is invaluable. Travelling across Africa and performing at this level is not easy, but the team showed professionalism and spirit. Now, we focus on Algeria — another big challenge, but in football, anything can happen.”

Uganda will face Algeria away on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, in their final qualifier — a decisive fixture that could determine whether the Cranes reach the playoff stage and keep their World Cup hopes alive.
