The Ruling Party National Resistance Movement (NRM) has concluded the registration of party members interested in contesting for the position of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
By the close of registration and expression of interest, the NRM Electoral Commission had received a total of 115 aspirants.
Dr Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, said the 115 will be making a go at the six positions that the ruling party has.
He said the commission will forward the names to CEC for vetting and consideration.
“We have received 115 aspirants vying for the 6 slots that the party has, we shall forward the names to CEC for consideration. This level of interest is a sign the party and its organs are very vibrant. To have 115 members showing interest for EALA is a good sign and record that has never been made,” Dr. Tanga said.
The NRM party opened the process of expression of interest for members who wish to vie for the EALA Positions on June 28 at their headquarters in Kampala.
The names of the aspirants will then be presented to the CEC which will recommend and pass the list of finalists to the NRM Parliamentary Caucus for further consideration.
The current MPs serving in the EALA include; James Kakooza, Denis Namara, George Odongo, Rose Akol, Mary Mugenyi and Paul Musamali.
Each term in EALA is five years and the law states that an MP can serve for only two terms.
