World Happiness Report Shows African Youth Happier Than Western Peers

KAMPALA — While youth happiness is plummeting across the West, the 2026 World Happiness Report reveals that Africa is defying the trend, with young people reporting higher life satisfaction despite the rapid rise of digital platforms.

The findings, published in the latest global wellbeing research, indicate that unlike in North America and Western Europe, young people across most regions, including Africa, have not experienced a comparable drop in life satisfaction over the past 15 years.

Globally, youth wellbeing has only significantly declined in Western Europe and countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In contrast, in most other regions — including Africa — young people today report equal or higher life satisfaction compared to older generations.

Researchers note that this is happening despite widespread use of social media across the globe, raising questions about whether digital platforms alone can explain falling happiness levels.

“The trends are caused by many factors, which differ between continents,” the report notes, cautioning against placing sole blame on social media.

However, the data still highlights risks linked to excessive use. According to international evidence from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), teenagers who spend more than seven hours a day on social media report significantly lower wellbeing than those who use it for less than one hour.

The gap is particularly pronounced in Western countries, especially among girls. But outside those regions, including in Africa, the negative effects appear weaker and more complex.

Experts say this suggests that how social media is used — rather than how much — may matter more in shaping wellbeing outcomes.

Studies cited in the report show that digital activities focused on communication, learning, and content creation are generally associated with higher life satisfaction. In contrast, passive scrolling, gaming, and browsing for entertainment tend to be linked to lower wellbeing.

In regions comparable to Africa, such as Latin America, countries have managed to maintain relatively high youth wellbeing despite heavy social media use. Analysts attribute this to stronger social connections and more interactive uses of digital platforms.

The report also underscores the importance of offline factors. A sense of belonging — particularly in schools — was found to have a much stronger impact on happiness than reductions in social media use.

“In global data, the gains in life satisfaction from improving school belonging far outweigh those from reducing social media use,” the report states.

Even in regions where youth wellbeing remains stable, concerns persist. Evidence from the Middle East and North Africa shows that heavy social media users are more likely to report stress and symptoms of depression, particularly when platforms are used for passive consumption or following influencers.

This aligns with broader global findings that the most harmful effects are linked to highly visual, comparison-driven content.

The report also highlights growing policy debates worldwide. Countries such as Australia have already moved to raise the minimum age for social media access, while several European nations are considering similar restrictions.

But researchers warn that policymaking must be guided by careful interpretation of evidence. “Poor synthesis of scientific findings risks creating ineffective policies or unintended harm,” the report cautions.

For African countries, the findings present both reassurance and a warning. While youth wellbeing has remained relatively resilient, experts say the rapid growth in digital access means the region could face similar challenges in the future if risks are not addressed early.

Ultimately, the report concludes that social media is only one piece of a much larger puzzle shaping youth wellbeing — one that includes education, social connections, economic conditions, and broader cultural contexts.
