“It all started like a joke, little did I know I was building my life long career goal with my passion in dancing” says Ibra Buwembo, the CEO Team Ibra Buwembo Dancers.
Speaking to SoftPower News team yesterday at Seven Trees Kololo during the first Azulator kids festival, Ibra revealed that for him, dancing started as a joke when he used to make his way to Sharing Youth Centre every day for an evening breakdance session under the Break Dance Project.
The Ugandan based youth led project works directly with a number of youth from different walks of life, helping redefine their lives and giving them hope for a better future by nurturing and building up their talents.
“I think in 2011 after being crowned winner of the highly contested Hot Steps Season 4, my life was just starting,” said Ibra Buwembo.
That the moment that propelled him to what he has become today, and since then, the dancer has never looked back. He chose to invest the Shs 4 million cash prize from the competition into his education as phone technician as well as buying creative outfit to start up his own dance academy.
Today, Ibra has a stable income working as a phone technician in Nsambya as well as dealer in phones, a business he runs throughout the day before he settles for the gigs and event invites in the evening or night time.
He noted that through his endless effort and hard work, he managed to put together a team of about ten youth who are indirectly employed under his dance company, Ibra Buwembo Dancers. Many of these, he says, have featured alongside him in several music videos.
“Many people know me as singer Eddy Kenzo’s dancer. Yes, he brought me to the lime light and made me travel the world and establish myself in this industry. I am not yet there, but I anticipate the best,” the dancer told this website.
In 2016, he featured on singer A Pass’s ‘Dance Like This’, a fast beat dance song whose video largely showcased Ibra’s well choreographed dance prowess.
He singles out the Director and Founder of Breakdance Project Uganda, Tekya Abrams as his biggest inspiration.
