Vipers SC confirmed the devastating news, stating that Lawal’s body has been transferred to a medical facility for a postmortem examination, with funeral arrangements to be announced later.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un,” read the club’s official statement.

Tributes Pour In

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) joined in mourning, with President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim expressing his deepest condolences to Lawal’s family, Vipers SC, the Nigeria Football Federation, and the entire football fraternity.

“Lawal’s immense contribution to Ugandan football will never be forgotten. His exceptional talent and dedication made him one of the most outstanding foreign players to have graced Ugandan football,” said Magogo.

A Legacy of Excellence

Lawal was instrumental in Vipers SC’s historic domestic double triumph during the 2022/23 season, helping the club secure both the Ugandan Premier League title and the Uganda Cup.

His technical brilliance, passion, and leadership made him one of the most distinguished foreign players in Ugandan football history.

Fans, coaches, and teammates have taken to social media to honour Lawal’s memory, describing him as a hardworking, disciplined, and inspiring figure both on and off the pitch.

Lawal’s passing marks a significant loss for Ugandan football, with the entire sporting community rallying around his family and loved ones.
