The Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Col (red) Tom Butime, has appointed a new Board of Trustees for the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
This is Pursuant to Section 8 (2) of the Uganda Wildlife Act 2019.
The appointment of the ten-member Board follows the end of the 9th Board and approval of nominees to the new board by the cabinet.
The 10th Board of Trustees was appointed effective September 1, 2023.
The members of the new board are; Prof. James Kalema, chairman, Ms. Marion Pamela (member) Dr. Stella Acaye Atim (member) Dr. Daniel Aleper (member), Ms. Annet Kobusinge Ireeba (member), Prof. Simon Wanyama (member), Mr. Raymond Engena (member), Ms. Jane Bagonza (member) Mr. George Owoyesigire (member) Mr. Samuel John Mwandha (ED/Secretary to Board)
“Each member brings a wealth of experience, expertise, and a strong commitment to the conservation and protection of Uganda’s exceptional wildlife and natural heritage,” a statement by UWA read.
The Board will oversee the Management team to ensure the sustainable management of wildlife resources and promote responsible tourism practices inside protected areas in line with the Uganda Wildlife Act 2019.
“Management and staff of Uganda Wildlife Authority take this opportunity to congratulate and express confidence in the appointed Board of Trustees. Management looks forward to their valuable contributions and strategic guidance in leading the Authority towards achieving its mandate of protecting and conserving Uganda’s wildlife for the benefit of present and future generations,” UWA added.
Composition of the Board.
According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority Act, the Board shall consist of:
(a) a member with professional experience in wildlife conservation science and in activities related to wildlife use rights management;
(b) a member with professional experience in corporate governance;
(c) a member with professional experience in matters related to management of protected areas;
(d) a member with experience in activities related to wildlife tour operations;
(e) a member with experience in activities related to tourism concessions in conservation areas;
(f) a representative of the ministry responsible for agriculture;
(g) a representative of the ministry responsible for wildlife;
(h) a representative of the ministry responsible for finance;
(i) a representative of the local communities surrounding the conservation areas nominated by the Uganda Local Governments Association; and
(j) the Executive Director who shall be the secretary to the Board and an ex officio and non voting member of the Board.
