Lower Shabelle, Somalia — The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), operating under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in coordination with the Somali National Army (SNA), have successfully driven Al-Shabaab militants out of Sabiid-Anole town in the Lower Shabelle region.

The strategic victory was achieved through “Operation Silent Storm,” a high-intensity, three-day offensive that culminated in the full recapture of the town. The operation forced the terrorists from fortified hideouts and underground tunnel networks they had used to evade detection.

At least 30 Al-Shabaab fighters were neutralised during the combined-arms assault. The joint forces also seized a cache of weapons and dismantled numerous Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) left behind by retreating militants.

Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, the AUSSOM Force Commander, praised the coordination and courage of the UPDF and SNA troops.

“I commend the bravery of our gallant AUSSOM-UPDF troops and the Somali National Army. This operation is part of our continued effort to degrade Al-Shabaab and fully implement the Somali Transition Plan, which will eventually see security responsibilities handed over to Somali forces,” Lt Gen Kavuma said.

Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, Commander of AUSSOM’s Sector One, emphasised the strategic importance of Sabiid-Anole. “Since March, this town had become a key operational hub for the terrorists—used to plan attacks, conceal weapons and vehicles for VBIEDs (Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices), and extort civilians through illegal checkpoints,” he noted.

Major General Sahal Abdullahi Omar, Commander of the Somali National Army’s Land Forces, also confirmed that ‘Operation Silent Storm’ successfully dismantled Al-Shabaab’s presence in the two villages.

With the area now under the control of AUSSOM and SNA forces, stabilisation efforts are underway. Troops are continuing security operations in the wider Afgooye District to eliminate any remaining Al-Shabaab elements and ensure the safety of civilians.

This latest success underscores the growing effectiveness of joint operations between AUSSOM and Somali security forces, as Somalia progresses toward full control of its national security under the Somali Transition Plan.
